Reckoning has impressed us. Not as much as it might have done, but enough that we’re nowdefinitely paying attention. A really big budget RPG with a new IP (and an old trad fantasy theme) and an action focus means this wants to be all things to all players (as long as they like swords & conversation) and it’s looking ludicrously slick to seal the deal. Alec had some time alone with it over here and it seems to be improving with each glimpse we get of it.

The original Borderlands’ cell-shaded FPS Diablo ‘em up wasn’t to everyone’s tastes, but to those who enjoyed getting a posse together and roaring out into the wastelands, it was a minor classic. Returning to Pandora with a squad of new characters, the sequel promises more of the same, only bigger and better. Which is what sequels do, right? We’ve already had a chance to talk to Gearbox about the game and see a little bit of it in action, and you can read the account of that just here.

The other MMO we’re getting excited about is Funcom’s The Secret World. If nothing else, it deals with subject matter that MMOs haven’t tackled before: the contemporary supernatural and global conspiracy. In The Secret World everything is true, and you’re just as likely to be tangling with Great Old Ones as you are sorting the vampires from the werewolves. With guns and hip contemporary clothing, it’s bound to gather a sizeable audience. We’re written loads about it, as you can see here.

Following a hiatus of eight years, Max is to return. It’s being developed by Rockstar this time, with Remedy having moved on to Alan Wake, and it’s dripping with spectacular gun action. It’s looking like an appropriate update to the series, too, despite the surprising move from New York ghetto to Sao Paulo slum. We’ve already had a look at the game in motion, and you can read those impressions here.

And while we’re on the subject of Remedy, they’ve announced that their 360 spooky action ‘em up, Alan Wake, is going to arrive on PC. Will it be polished for PC or impractically ported? Only time will tell. We had a bit of a chat with them here.
Carbine’s beautiful-looking intergalactic pseudo-Wild West seems the perfect locale for a traditional MMO romp. With exploration skills and giant alien yetis, we can’t see any way that this can fail to be entertaining. That is, of course, if you like to do a bit of questing. And we know you do, you filthy beast. You can read lots about what to expect from the thing just here.

UPDATE: This one is for 2013, actually. Sorry. We don’t know too much about this yet, other than that it is definitely happening on the Bioware label (with a studio formed from the ashes of old C&C teams), and that it is following on from Generals rather than the other C&C fictions. The game will also be using a variant of DICE’s Frostbite engine, which means it could have the same level of fidelity as Battlefield 3, as well as lots of exploding scenery.
It’s fair to say that in the competitive world of games that are a bit like DOTA, Valve’s DOTA 2 is going to be a big deal. Currently in beta, it’s already a hot topic for the MOBA crowd, and drawing lots of pro-gaming interest. It’ll be even more interesting to see what kind of impact the official launch makes. Everything we have on DOTA 2 is just here.

Speaking of ultraviolence, we’re expecting The Darkness sequel to arrive on PC in 2012, too. We’re not totally convinced about the quality of this one, but the first game was surprisingly solid, so it’ll be interesting to see how this one turns out.

Man, I got pretty pissed off with DarkSiders, but it was still a well put together sort of game. The next one has Death as the main character, too, so where can it go wrong? We actually got an early look at the game, to see where it might go wrong, and you can read that here.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising

Publisher: Konami
Release: 2012
As big-haired, sharp-cheekboned cyber ninja Raiden, you’re hunting baddies in the near-ish future. The emphasis is on quick, offensive swordplay, using the dev’s terrifying attention to how bodies are sliced and diced. The series is perhaps best known for its fourth-wall-shattering plot devices and inventive game mechanics: we’re always happy to see more of that on the PC.

Street Fighter X Tekken

Publisher: Capcom
Release: Spring
Pitting Capcom and Namco’s finest against each other for the first time outside of bitter playground arguments, Street Fighter X Tekken brings tag team battles to the Street Fighter IV format. But is it coming to PC or not? A PC version was announced by Capcom in April, but quickly withdrawn as a ‘typo’, before being upgraded to a ‘maybe’. Come on Capcom.

Dota 2 Editing ~! Quest Comes To An End!~

The Counter-Strike Global Offensive Beta now has it’s own SDK which ships with more up to date tools than the Alien Swarm SDK does.
It fixes a number of issues we’ve been having with the model viewer, for example, it allows the models that have been broken up into multiple parts that don’t currently work properly in the Alien Swarm SDK like Windrunner’s and Nature’s Prophet’s to work properly resulting in the ability for me to provide you GIFs like the one below.

The initial steps are very similar to the Alien Swarm SDK guide but a few extra steps are required later on in the tutorial.

Step One

Step Two

Launch GCFScape and open the “dota 2 beta\dota\pak01_dir.vpk” file.

Step Three

Extract the “root” directory to somewhere on your hard drive and then rename it to “DOTA 2″ after the extraction is finished.

Step Four

Copy the “materials” and “models” folder from the extracted files in to the CS: GO folder: “Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\csgo”.

Step Five

Next you need to mass edit the vmt material files, for this I suggest using Notepad++ using  the “Find in Files” feature, which you can find under “Search –> Find in Files…”.

Step Six

Using Notepad++’s “Find in Files” feature you need to find “CustomHero” and replace with “VertexLitGeneric”, filter for “*.vmt” and choose the directory “Counter-Strike Global Offensive\csgo\materials\models” making sure “In all sub-folders” is also selected.
Press “Replace in Files” when you’ve your options setup like above.

Step Seven

Install the “Counter-Strike Global Offensive Beta – SDK” from the Steam library tool list.

Step Eight

Launch the ”Counter-Strike Global Offensive Beta – SDK” and launch “Model Viewer”.

Step Nine

In the “Model Viewer” press “File” and select “Load Model…”.

Step Ten

You will now be in the model file structure, from here you can go into the different folders and load a “*.mdl” file.

Step Eleven

When loading a model like Nature’s Prophet you’ll notice only his base model is loaded and parts will be missing.

Step Twelve

In order to resolve this you need to load in the extra parts as “Weapons”, via the “File –> Load Weapon…” option.
Select the extra part like when you loaded in the initial model.
The extra part will then be loaded into the model viewer.

Step Thirteen

You should now know how to load models into the CS: GO model viewer, enjoy.

Inversion PC 2012

Set in the near future, the tranquil peace enjoyed by mankind shatters with an unforeseen invasion by an unknown enemy called the Lutadore. Armed to the teeth with futuristic gravity-controlling weapons, the Lutadore easily overrun the city's defenses. Unbeknownst to all, mysterious anomalies have surfaced in conjunction with the invasion. Random regions in the city have entered zero gravity or have suffered vector changes, throwing the world into topsy-turvy chaos. Assuming the role of Davis Russel, a hotheaded 28-year-old cop, or Leo Delgado, Davis’ neighbor, players will embark on a journey through the disorienting war-ravaged, gravity twisted streets of their home town and beyond, to find Davis' missing child.
Inversion is a third-person co-op shooter that combines hard-hitting, adrenaline-pumping action with a revolutionary gravity manipulation engine. Featuring the Grappler weapon, players will be able to manipulate gravity for their own purposes.
